The Devil-Goat Day Digital History Project explores more than a century of one of the University of Mary Washington’s most beloved traditions.
Beginning in 1926, students created a playful rivalry between graduating classes: those in odd-numbered years became “Devils,” while those in even-numbered years became “Goats.”
What started as a small student initiative quickly grew into a defining campus event that fosters class pride, friendly competition, and shared community.
Through an interactive timeline and archival materials from Simpson Library’s Special Collections, this digital exhibit highlights how Devil-Goat Day has evolved while remaining a lasting symbol of the student experience at UMW!
