The Historian’s Craft in a Digital Age: What Has Really Changed?

The major difference for historians in an increasingly digital world is that nearly every aspect of the historical process, from accessing sources to sharing research, is now mediated through technology. For instance, digitization and search engines have transformed history from one of scarcity to one of overwhelming abundance. New techniques such as text mining, mapping, and analysis allow historians to research history on a larger scale, and digital platforms have removed the line that once separated academic and public history. The advent of AI has accelerated these developments and opened new possibilities for historians to automate many aspects of research and analysis. However, there is now a fear of bias and a loss of nuance in history. Ultimately, historians must not only interpret history but also be critical of the digital tools that increasingly shape history.
